I had a friend call up yesterday with a not so uncommon problem. He tried to recover some old photos from a backup he had done 4 years ago on CD’s and of course he had no access to some of the CD’s. This post is not about a solution but a warning.
Avoid at all cost:
- cheap no-name bargain CD/DVD packs
- problematic and overclocked computer systems
- cheap or known problematic drives
Writing to CD/DVD should be done:
- by a properly built computer with no overclocking going on
- a clean and healthy install of the operating system
- a good quality burning program such as Nero
- a good quality and reputable burner such as a Plextor writer
- and of course branded DVD’s
Also when backing up any kind of information, please use the verify option that will check what was written against the new data as found on the freshly written CD.
